Yup LOUD--------------- and they give up a few hundred FPS. For a short barrel I believe a larger bore is better so you can burn the powder is a shorter length. The 308 does pretty well in short barrels. Another that does well is an 8X57. 338 Fed and 358 Winchesters are also good as is the old 9.3X57
But a "slow 270" is still quite good, if you can get past the muzzle blast.

There is an old Rem 700 ADL 270 with a 20" barrel in my family. It has been a long time since I've fired it, but I do recall it having a bit more bark than the similar length 308 that Dad and I used to shoot in those days. 60 grains of H4831 will have more muzzle pressure than 46 grains of IMR 4064.

Don’t know much about 20 in barreled 270s but I watched several tv shows featuring the guy on THE ONE and I believe Savage outdoors who used a savage lightweight hunter in 270 win. He killed several elk and deer handily. No mention of muzzle blast. If I could find one in great condition for $500.00 I’d buy it and hunt with it as well.

Obnoxious! I prefer 24” on the 270, then the baby magnum shines.

It makes no sense whatsoever to me to have a short barrel hunting rifle chambered for a long action cartridge.
For long action cartridges, my preferred length is 22” (minimum) or longer.

Yep, I had a Rem 700 ADL with a 20" barrel. Lotsa blast but it shot well & deer didn't mind. Looks like it may be ideal for installing a suppressor, if you're into that sort of thing.

Kaboom fear has kept me from buying some very nifty Ruger RSIs over the years. Learned my lesson with a Remington 600 in .308, fifty years ago or so. Light and loud, a great combination.
Based on what I’ve experienced at the shooting range, no single form of protection is enough for some of those little cannons. I try to bring two types in case someone shows up next to me with something loud.
What fresh Hell is this?

I had a.pushfeed M70 Carbine in 270 with the 20" barrel it was too loud for me. Foam plugs and muff still loud as well as the muzzle blast. Just another bad idea....mb

I have two that are 20 inch tubes. I'm getting a tad over 3040fps with 130gr SST's. Yeah, they are loud. All rifles are loud. I never shoot any of them with out protection. Even hunting... Yeah, I've had a couple of .270s with 20-inch barrels and never noticed whether they were any louder than .270s with longer barrels. And it was easy to get over 3000 fps with 130s, which is what the .270 Winchester was originally all about, and still kills stuff well.

I had a Weatherby Vanguard VGL 270 with a 20" barrel and really regret letting it go.
